New Documentary on the Health Of Lake Erie

Today, Three Pines Production Company LLC of Toledo, Ohio officially announced the new documentary The Big Problem In The Great Lakes, recounting the Toledo Water Crisis of 2014, as well as investigating the causes of the algal blooms that formed in Lake Erie that led to the City of Toledo declaring its tap water not safe to use. The film will be released on the ten-year anniversary of the Water Crisis, August 2, 2024. The company is also releasing a trailer for the film today.

The Big Problem In The Great Lakes features residents and experts discussing their experiences and proposed solutions to the problems with Lake Erie algal blooms that led to the Water Crisis. Kim Axe is a local resident and activist, whose experiences the film is based around, while Dr. Greg Dick of the University of Michigan, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, and small family farmers Dennis and Tony Ruffing provide additional expertise on the subject. Paul Fuzinski of Aptitude Outdoors played a crucial role in the filming of the documentary, bringing his expertise in capturing the natural beauty and challenges of the Great Lakes region.

“My hope in making this film is to spark a wider discussion on water quality issues that impact us all,” said Mike Balonek, the film’s director and Three Pines Production Company chief. He continues, “As global temperatures rise, Lake Erie is the canary in the coal mine when it comes to issues with toxic algal blooms. If our leaders can act now to better regulate the farm runoff that causes these algal blooms, we may be able to head off a larger disaster in the future.”

Three Pines Production Company emphasizes the importance of the Great Lakes' health, not only for the environment but also for hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts who rely on these waters for recreation and livelihood. The interconnectedness of water quality and outdoor activities highlights the broader implications of the crisis and the urgent need for sustainable solutions.

Paul Fuzinski of Aptitude Outdoors commented, "The health of our Great Lakes is vital to the conservation of wildlife and the enjoyment of outdoor activities. Clean water supports robust ecosystems that benefit hunters, anglers, and all those who cherish the outdoors. We must work together to protect these natural resources for future generations."

Three Pines Production Company says the film will be available to watch for free on YouTube. Anyone interested in learning more can do so at www.thebigprobleminthegreatlakes.com.
